2013 Tribeca Film Festival World Premiere of Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau

New York Surf Film Festival is proud to cohost screenings April 26 & 27th, 2013

April 9, 2013 New York, NY – The New York Surf Film Festival is excited to cohost the World Premiere of Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau as part of New York City’s annual Tribeca Film Festival this month. Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau directed by Sam George examines the legacy of the fearless big wave surfer and first-ever North Shore lifeguard beyond inspiring one of surfing’s most famous catchphrases, “Eddie Would Go.” Through interviews, reenactments and dynamic historical footage, professional-surfer-turned-filmmaker Sam George uncovers Aikau’s little-known personal and family history and finds a compelling allegory for the reclaiming of Hawaiian culture.

“101 years after Duke Kahanamoku first surfed Rockaway Beach, the TriBeca Film Festival in New York is the perfect place to premier “Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau,” says film director Sam George.  “Not only is New York’s surf community one of the most stoked on Earth, it’s also one of the most cultured, with a refined appreciation for art, music and film. We really look forward to giving that community the first look at the greatest surf story never told. Until now.”

Producer, Creative Director, and NY native Paul Taublieb shared with us his experience growing up as a New York surfer:

“Having grown up in Great Neck I made the drive for years to Laurelton Blvd in Long Beach, sometimes 38th St in the Rockaways, a rare session at Breezy Point, and lots of sessions on the east end, not to mention many a day at Gilgo.  One time I had my board on the Long Island Rail Road and was told ‘no surfboards.’  Keeping in mind this was the heyday of Andy Warhol, I told the guy I bought the thing as a piece of modern art and had no idea what it was — and made it to Long Beach that day.  I ran the ESA in NY for a couple of years and once held a contest called “the Saint Valentine’s Day Masochism.”  I wrote quite a few articles about the NY scene for Surfer and Surfing mags and jumped over many a snowbank into the ocean once upon a time - and once in a two-piece dry suit which exploded and I almost drowned that one February day. From the surf of NY to being entrusted to the story of Eddie Aikau.  Who would have thought?  Now to be able to bring the film back to the NY surf community that I grew up in to World Premiere, it’s cool!”
